Pacifico Biolabs raises €7M to scale mycelium fermentation in brewery tanks

Pacifico Biolabs banked €7M in a Series A funding round to scale its fermentation technology. The financing supports the German startup’s mission to produce alternative protein sources using industrial side streams and existing infrastructure.

The company develops a proprietary processes to cultivate "Abunda" mycelium, a nutrient-dense biomass that serves as a base for whole-cut seafood and meat alternatives. Unlike traditional plant-based options, the mycelium-based product aims to replicate the fibrous texture and nutritional profile of animal protein without heavy processing.

Pacifico Biolabs utilises a "circular" production model by converting side streams from the food and beverage industries into feedstock for its fermentation process. A key part of the scale-up strategy involves retrofitting disused brewery tanks to serve as bioreactors, significantly reducing the capital expenditure typically required for large-scale fermentation facilities.

As European consumer demand for sustainable proteins persists despite a broader cooling in venture funding, the ability to repurpose existing industrial assets provides a more capital-efficient path to market for high-growth FoodTech hardware.
